2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Becomes A Driverless Robotaxi
Hyundai Motor Group and Motional, a company engaged in the development of technologies for driverless mobility, presented the Ioniq 5 robotaxi, a level 4 autonomous vehicle that can move without a driver. As the name suggests, the vehicle is based on the electric version of Hyundai Ioniq 5, launched worldwide earlier this year.
A zero-emission model, it represents the convergence of the two transforming technologies in the world of mobility: electrification and autonomous driving. The goal of the fusion of both technologies is to make transport smarter, safer and more sustainable.
Technology: How the Ioniq robotaxi works 5
Aesthetically, the robotaxi differs from conventional vehicles for the series of sensors it is equipped with on the outside. The Ioniq 5 robotaxi has in fact more than 30 sensors including cameras, radar and Lidar that offer a solid 360 degree perception, high resolution images and a very long range object detection capability to ensure maximum safety in various environments.
The robotaxi is equipped with Motional’s autonomous driving technology which incorporates advanced machine learning systems, optimized using data collected over decades in the real world, so that the vehicle can operate safely in complex driving situations.
The Ioniq 5 robotaxi is built on the Electric Global Modular Platform, Hyundai Motor Group’s battery electric vehicle platform capable of ultra-fast charging and a long driving range.
Using this platform, the interior of the vehicle offers a large and comfortable space to work, rest or socialize while driving without a driver. It should be noted that the interiors have several interfaces focused on driving to allow passengers to interact with the vehicle during the journey in a very intuitive way. Thanks to these technologies, the user experience aboard the Ioniq 5 robotaxi sets a new standard in the field of driverless passenger transport.
Hyundai Motor Group and Motional have attached great importance to passenger safety and comfort, evident in all elements of the vehicle. There are dual safety systems in all functions including navigation, steering, braking and power to ensure a safe and smooth ride at all times.
The Ioniq 5 robotaxi will be deployed in multiple US markets and will begin carrying passengers in 2023 thanks to a historic partnership with Lyft. Ioniq 5 has starting price $44,000.
